6: CHAOS THEORY
âWe are about to enter Hive City, sir,â Jonas said through his rigâs portavox unit. The Spyrer commander held up a hand to halt his fellow Spyrers as he made his report.
âExcellent,â replied Kaudererâs voice in his ear. âI have new information for you from my agent in the field. The most recent sighting has Armand somewhere near a bar called The Breath of Fresh Air. It is not far from your current location.â
âI know the place, sir,â replied Jonas. âWe will find the renegade.â
âBelay that order,â snapped Kauderer. âI must still make my report to Lord Helmawr, and I do not want to have to include a Hive City riot in that report.â
âSir?â
âYou are to proceed with all due caution,â ordered Kauderer. âWe cannot afford any enforcer involvement. Remove your rigs before entering the City. This is still a covert operation. You must not cause any incidents inside Hive City. Neither the Enforcers nor the City Houses must be alerted to your presence.â
âRemove our rigs, sir?â asked Jonas. âThat would be most unusual, these arenât really the kind of thing that one just removes.â He sounded indignant.
âWhatâs the matter with you, Jonas?â said Kauderer. âWhat are you, some kind of Green Hunter? Your rigs have been configured for this mission, and this mission alone. You might lack some of your customary power boosts, but Iâm sure youâll find the preparations I ordered have made your devices rather more flexible, than usual.â
Jonas snorted. He wasnât convinced it was such a good idea and wasnât going to let it rest quite so easily. âHow are we to take down Armand without our rigs, sir?â
âThat has all been taken care of,â replied Kauderer, curtly. âThereâs a weapons stash in the city.â
âVery well!â said Jonas grudgingly. He turned to his squad and relayed the news. âLeoni, Grell,â he called to the two Spyrers wearing Malcadon rigs. They had tubes running from their gauntlets to a large device on their backs that produced thick, viscous webbing. They saluted. âClimb into the rafters and use your webs to attach all of our gear away from prying eyes. Weâre going into the city, in street gear.â
âIâll fly up there with them,â said Chimone. Jonas thought that the Spyrer wearing the Yeld rig, was a whiny, little hive brat, but heâd been forced to accept her as part of the team due to her political connections.
âNo,â said Jonas. âYou will keep your rig. I want you to fly on ahead of us and then use your rigâs camo to stay out of sight until we need you.â
Chimone smiled. He hated giving her the plum assignment, but he had no choice. Without their rigs, they would be vulnerable. He needed eyes on the inside. Chimone flew off, but the rest of the squad just looked at him. âYou heard your orders. Now move.â
âYou know where this Breath of Fresh Air is located?â asked Valtin as they walked through the city. Even he could feel the change in the air now.
